Osaka Castle |
Osaka Castle is a Japanese castle that located in Osaka. This castle construction started in 1583 on the former site of the Ishiyama Hoganji Temple, but was destroyed by Oda Nobunaga. Later Toyotomi Hideyoshi rebuilt Osaka Castle and want it to be the center of a new, unified Japan, that time Osaka Castle was the largest castle.
However, a few years after Hideyoshi's death, Tokugawa attacked and destroyed the castle in 1615. Osaka Castle was rebuilt by Tokugawa Hidetada in the 1620s, but its main castle tower was struck by lightening in 1665 and burnt down.
In 1931 the reconstruction of the castle tower was built, and in 1997 it's been repaired and the castle now is entirely modern on the inside and even features an elevator. Inside there is an informative museum about the castle's history and Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
The castle tower is surrounded by secondary citadels, gates, turrets, impressive stone walls and moats. There is a garden called Nishinomaru Garden with 600 cherry trees and a tea house. It needs an admission fee to enter this garden.

Before you reach Osaka Castle you will walk along the Osaka Castle Park which is covers about two square kilometers with lots of green space, sport facilities, a multi purpose arena and a shrine dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The park is one of Osaka's most popular hanami spot during the cherry blossom season, which usually takes place in early April.
